Le prix Hugo (Hugo Award), dont le titre original est Science Fiction Achievement Award, est décerné chaque année aux meilleurs récits de science-fiction ou de fantasy de langue anglaise publiés l'année précédente, ainsi qu'à d'autres catégories tels les fanzines ou les productions cinématographiques. Le nombre de catégories a évolué au fil du temps, à mesure que la science-fiction s'étendait à de nouveaux médias. Les lauréats sont élus par un collège de fans de science-fiction et reçoivent leur prix lors de l'annuelle Convention mondiale de science-fiction, la World Science Fiction Convention aussi appelée Worldcon. Le nom de la récompense rend hommage à Hugo Gernsback, fondateur d'un des premiers magazines de science-fiction américain Amazing Stories.

Il arrive parfois que l'on décerne des Prix Hugo rétrospectifs (couramment appelés Rétro-Hugo). Ils sont décernés lors d'une Convention se tenant 50, 75 ou 100 ans après une Convention n'ayant pas décerné de prix. Une fois les Rétro-Hugo attribués, aucune autre récompense n'est autorisée pour l'année considérée.

La statuette du Prix Hugo fut conçue par un fan de science-fiction de longue date, Benedict Jablonski, qui s'inspira de l'ornement de proue d'une Oldsmobile 88 en forme de fusée. Elle a été mise en scène dans le dernier épisode de la série Babylon 5.


Historique

La première Convention mondiale de science-fiction eut lieu à New York en 1939. Bien que des élections de meilleurs romans et autres aient eu lieu depuis la première Convention, il faut attendre la 11e Convention (Philadelphie, 1953) pour qu'un prix soit officiellement décerné suite à une proposition d'Hal Lynch, ce qui à l'époque était considéré comme un évènement isolé. Ce n'est que lors de la 13e Convention (Cleveland, 1955) que la remise d'un Prix fut officiellement adoptée comme partie intégrante de la Convention.

La toute première statuette fut fabriquée artisanalement par Jack McKnight et représentait une fusée d'acier munie de ses ailerons fixée sur un socle de bois circulaire. Lors de la 13e Convention, un nouveau design, mieux adapté à une production en série, fut réalisé par Ben Jason. Le nouveau design restait très fidèle au précédent à l'exception du socle désormais carré. Cette statuette n'a connu depuis lors que des évolutions mineures.
Le premier prix fut décerné sous le nom de Annual Science Fiction Achievement Award, cependant la plupart des commentateurs et des fans lui préférèrent le terme Prix Hugo qui devint la désignation officielle en 1993.

Alors que les statuts de la World Science Fiction Society autorisent expressément les romans de fantasy à concourir pour le Prix Hugo, dans les faits jusqu'à très récemment la majeure partie des prix ont été remportés par des romans de science-fiction. Ceci peut expliquer les vives réactions qu'a provoqué la victoire de Harry Potter et la Coupe de feu, un roman fantasy de J. K. Rowling plutôt destiné aux jeunes adultes, lors de la Convention de 2001. En fait la controverse portait surtout sur la publication du roman dans une collection destinée à la jeunesse plutôt que sur la qualité du roman lui-même. En effet pas moins d'une vingtaine d'œuvres de pure fantasy ont été nominées par le passé pour le meilleur roman et au moins une demi-douzaine ont remporté le prix dans des catégories de tailles inférieures. On peut aussi citer les œuvres hybrides de Harlan Ellison, plusieurs fois récompensées.

Depuis, d'autres œuvres de fantasy ont remporté le prix, cette fois beaucoup moins sujettes à controverses : American Gods de Neil Gaiman en 2002, Paladin des âmes de Lois McMaster Bujold en 2004 et Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell de Susanna Clarke en 2005. En effet, tant Gaiman que Bujold peuvent se prévaloir d'une solide réputation d'écrivain de science-fiction et sont des habitués des prix littéraires.

Le prix s'attira également de nombreuses critiques en 2004 lorsque le prix du meilleur court-métrage fut décerné à une animation de Gollum diffusée lors de la remise d'un MTV Movie Award pour Le Seigneur des Anneaux, aux dépens d'épisodes plus classiques de Firefly, Buffy contre les vampires et Smallville.
