Global Precipitation Measurement est un mission spatiale conjointe de la JAXA et de la NASA ainsi que d'autres organismes internationaux pour des mesures fréquentes (toutes les 3 heures) de l'humidité atmosphérique de la Terre. Il fait partie du programme Earth Systematic Missions de la NASA et doit assurer à terme une couverture de pratiquement l'ensemble de la planète. L'exploitation des données est à la charge du centre de vols spatiaux Goddard de la NASA qui fournira des cartes des précipitations mondiales pour aider les scientifiques qui effectuent des recherches exploitant les données climatiques mondiales[1].

Le programme met en œuvre plusieurs satellites. Le satellite pilote qui étudiera la structure des précipitations et fournira aux autres satellites les éléments de calibration aux autres engins spatiaux du projet doit être lancé le 21 juillet 2013 tandis qu'un satellite à faible inclinaison doit être lancé en novembre 2014.
