Terra (EOS AM-1) est un satellite de recherche lancé par la NASA sur une orbite héliosynchrone autour de la Terre. Son nom vient du mot latin signifiant "Terre". C'est le premier satellite du programme Earth Observing System (EOS : Système d'observation de la Terre). Terra a été lancé depuis Vandenberg Air Force Base le 18 décembre 1999 à bord d'un lanceur Atlas IIAS et a commencé à effectuer des mesures le 24 février 2000.
Équipement
Terra embarque cinq capteurs utilisés pour surveiller l'état de l'environnement de la Terre et les changements progressifs de son climat :
- ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer)
- CERES (Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System)
- MISR (Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer)
- MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)
- MOPITT (Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere)
