The Weather Underground Organisation ou The Weathermen est une organisation états-unienne d'extrême gauche pratiquant la guérilla urbaine[1]. Créée à Ann Arbor, Michigan, en 1969, elle est basée sur l'idée d'un communisme mondial émergeant du tiers-monde, plutôt que de l'Union soviétique. Le groupe prônait la solidarité inter-ethnique, et était lié avec les Black Panthers. Il s'est manifesté par de nombreux attentats à la bombe aux États-Unis au cours des années 1970. Il est considéré comme éteint.

Historique

Le mouvement émerge lors du dernier congrès national du Students for a Democratic Society, où les dissensions internes conduisent à sa dissolution. Le Weather Underground ne s'attaquait qu'à des cibles matérielles, et les attentats ne firent aucune victime, à l'exception de trois membres du Weather Underground Organisation (Diana Oughton, Ted Gold et Terry Robbins) qui périrent dans une explosion lors de la confection d'une bombe destinée à un bal donné en l'honneur des soldats se battant au Viêt Nam à Fort Dix. En effet, la guerre du Viêt Nam était ce qui cimentait les Weathermen entre eux et ce qui les poussaient à lutter contre l'administration américaine. Leur slogan était Bring the war home! (en français : « Importez la guerre à la maison ! »), et leurs actes visaient justement à faire vivre aux citoyens américains la guerre menée par les États-Unis au Viêt Nam.

Cette organisation a également aidé à s'évader de prison l'écrivain et psychologue, Timothy Leary en 1970 ; ce dernier, après avoir été arrêté en Afghanistan et extradé vers les États-Unis, collaborera avec le FBI pour les enquêtes menées sur le Weather Underground.

Leur nom provient des paroles de la chanson Subterranean Homesick Blues de Bob Dylan: « You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows » (« Pas besoin d'un météorologue pour savoir dans quelle direction le vent souffle »), ce qui signifiait pour eux « tout le monde voit que la révolution est imminente » (« anyone could see, world revolution was imminent », citation extraite du documentaire Weather Underground).
