Parfois surnommés les « prix Nobel asiatiques[1],[2],[3],[4] », ils sont accompagnés d'une récompense d'un million de dollars américains grâce au don philanthropique du magnat des médias hong-kongais, Run Run Shaw (en), qui a créé le prix et la fondation qui porte son nom.
Le prix sert à récompenser des scientifiques dans les domaines de l'astronomie, des sciences biologiques et médicales et des mathématiques.
