Lee Grant (31 octobre 1927 à New York - ) est une actrice, réalisatrice et scénariste américaine.

Biographie

Lee Grant est née Lyova Haskepp Rosenthal à New York, fille d'immigrés juifs d'Europe orientale. Sa mère, Witia Haskell, est enseignante, et son père Abraham W. Rosenthal est courtier en immeubles et éducateur. Son nom de scène, Lee Grant, est une compilation des deux principaux généraux américains de la guerre civile. À quatre ans, elle débute comme ballerine au Metropolitan Opera de New York et durant son enfance, elle étudie la danse et la comédie.

Lee Grant s'est établie en tant qu'actrice dramatique dans les théâtres de Broadway. Elle a fait ses débuts au cinéma dans la version cinématographique de Detective Story, a reçu son premier Oscar du meilleur second rôle féminin et gagné le Prix d'interprétation féminine au Festival de Cannes. Dans les années 1950, elle fut l'une des victimes du maccarthysme et inscrite sur la liste noire du cinéma. Appelée devant le House Un-American Activities Committee à témoigner contre son mari, le dramaturge Arnold Manoff, père de sa fille, l'actrice Dinah Manoff, elle refusa de témoigner et fut finalement mise à l'index du cinéma américain. Elle continua à travailler au théâtre et repris sa carrière cinématographique dans les années 1960, apparaissant dans la série télévisée Peyton Place. Elle a remporté un Emmy Award pour ses performances remarquables dans la catégorie "actrice dans un second rôle".

Lee Grant a reçu d'autres nominations à l'Oscar du cinéma pour Le Propriétaire (The Landlord) (1970), et Le Voyage des damnés (Voyage of the Damned) (1976) et a remporté un Oscar pour Shampoo (1975). Comme réalisatrice, on lui doit plusieurs films documentaires, dont Down and Out in America (1986) qui a remporté l'Oscar du long métrage documentaire. Ces dernières années, elle a dirigé une série d'épisodes de Intimate Portrait (pour Lifetime Television).

Elle apparaît dans le rôle d'une avocate meurtrière dans un épisode de Columbo, pour lequel elle a été nommée pour un Emmy comme actrice principale de suspens dans une série télévisée. Elle a reçu également un Emmy pour sa performance dans The Neon Ceiling. Elle avait créé sa propre sitcom, une série intitulée Fay (1975), qui, malgré sa popularité, fut annulée après seulement huit épisodes par la NBC.

Elle a aussi été l'invitée vedette de Empty Nest, une série TV dans laquelle sa fille Dinah Manof était une habituée.
