Biographie

Joanne Woodward dans Rachel, Rachel (1968)

Attirée dès le plus jeune âge par le théâtre, elle fréquente les cours de l'Actor's Studio. Elle participe à sa première pièce à Broadway, Picnic, à côté de Paul Newman, qui deviendra son époux.

Elle joue alors beaucoup à la télévision.

En 1955, elle obtient son premier rôle au cinéma (Count three and pray). Un film marque cette période: Les Trois Visages d'Ève (1957), pour lequel elle décroche l'oscar de la meilleure actrice.

Joanne Woodward participe au film réalisé par son mari: Rachel, Rachel. Le prix de la Critique New Yorkaise viendra récompenser sa prestation.

Elle a été la première personne à recevoir une étoile sur le Hollywood Walk Of Fame le 9 février 1960.
