Sándor Lorand est un psychanalyste hongrois qui a émigré en 1925 aux USA pour fuir l'antisémitisme de son pays. Il a d'abord fait des études de philosophie avant celles de médecine pour devenir gynécologue et obstétricien. C'est en tant que tel qu'il s'intéressera à l'hypnose puis à la psychanalyse qu'il connaîtra à travers Sándor Ferenczi avec qui il fera aussi son analyse personnelle. À New York devenu sa ville d'adoption, il pratique la psychanalyse et co-dirige Jewish Hillside Hospital. Il a été très actif sur le plan des institutions psychanalytiques et c'est avec Abraham A. Brill qu'il fondera l'Institut de Psychanalyse de New York qu'il présidera. Il est resté attaché aux idées de Ferenczi, gardera des contacts amicaux avec ses compatriotes Geza Roheim et Michael Balint.
