Il né le 1er avril 1917 à New York.
Sa première épouse Lucille meurt en 2000, dont il a eu deux enfants. Il épouse en seconde noce Ruth Florea le 20 décembre 2001.
On remarque notamment sa présidence de la Writers Guild of America de 1969 à 1971, puis de 1979 à 1981, et enfin de 1985 à 1987.
