La clonidine est un agoniste des récepteurs adrénergiques de type α2. Il a été utilisé historiquement comme traitement de certaines formes d'hypertension. Plusieurs utilisations ont suivi, comme par exemple anesthésique ou encore comme en combinaison avec certains stimulants prescrits chez les patients atteint de trouble du déficit de l'attention ADHD.
Comprimés et patch transdermique de clonidine
La principale utilisation de ce médicament est le traitement de l'hypertension. Il se fixe sur les récepteurs adrénergiques α2 du cerveau, ce qui conduit à une diminution du rythme cardiaque ainsi qu'à une diminution de la pression artérielle périphérique. Ces deux effets produisent la diminution de la pression artérielle voulue.
