Hugh John Lofting (Maidenhead, Berkshire, Angleterre, 14 janvier 1886 - Topanga (Californie) 26 septembre 1947) était un auteur britannique, formé comme ingénieur civil, qui a créé le personnage de Docteur Dolittle, un classique de la littérature d'enfance et de jeunesse.
Après avoir servi lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, où il fut gravement blessé, sa famille et lui déménagèrent dans le Connecticut aux États-Unis. Il se maria trois fois et eut trois enfants, dont l'un, son fils Christopher, est son exécuteur littéraire.
