L'Orchestre philharmonique tchèque (Česká filharmonie en tchèque) est le principal et le plus célèbre orchestre symphonique de République tchèque. Il siège au Rudolfinum à Prague.

Histoire

L'orchestre trouve ses origines au XIXe siècle dans l'orchestre de l'Opéra national de Prague. Le premier concert sous sa dénomination actuelle a lieu le 4 janvier 1896 : au programme, des œuvres de Dvořák dirigées par le compositeur lui-même. Mais c'est seulement à partir de 1901 que l'orchestre devient complètement indépendant de l'Opéra.

En 1908, Gustav Mahler dirige l'orchestre pour la première mondiale de sa Symphonie nº 7.

Mais c'est le chef Václav Talich qui, pendant les vingt ans qu'il passe à la tête de l'orchestre, donne véritablement à celui-ci sa notoriété internationale.

Aujourd'hui, l'orchestre est dirigé par Zdeněk Mácal (il le sera selon toute apparence jusqu'en 2008)
