Un (R) indique que le pilote était éligible au trophée du "Rookie of the Year" (meilleur débutant de l'année), décerné à Jeff Ward.

Notes

  • Comme lors de l'édition 1979, une pirouette réglementaire permet de qualifier 35 voitures et non 33 comme le veut la tradition. Dans le cadre de la guerre CART/IRL, les organisateurs avaient assuré leurs places sur la grille aux participants réguliers du championnat IRL, et cela quel que soit leur chrono de qualification. Mais ce mode de qualification eut pour effet de laisser sur la touche Johnny Unser et Lyn St. James (deux des "favoris" du public), qui avaient pourtant réalisé de meilleurs chronos que certains qualifiés. Les organisateurs décidèrent donc de les repêcher.
  • Initialement prévue le dimanche 25 mai, la course est reportée au lundi (jour férié aux Etats-Unis) à cause de la pluie. Mais au bout de 15 tours, de nouvelles intempéries obligent les organisateurs à remettre l'épreuve au mardi.
