Barbara Low était une psychanalyste anglaise née en 1877, morte en 1955. Elle avait acquis une formation d'enseignante et s'était engagée politiquement au parti travailliste avant de se tourner vers la psychanalyse. Elle a fait une psychanalyse à Berlin avec Hanns Sachs. De retour dans son pays, elle s'est complètement consacrée à la psychanalyse comme didacticienne et comme l'un des membres fondateurs de la Société britannique de psychanalyse (British Psychoanalytical Society). Elle s'était rangée aux thèses de Anna Freud qu'elle a activement défendue contre celles de Mélanie Klein. Elle est aussi connue pour avoir été la première à utiliser le terme Principe de nirvana
