Harry Stack Sullivan (New York 1892 - Paris 1949) est un psychiatre et psychanalyste américain. Il est connu pour avoir défini la psychiatrie comme « l'étude du comportement interpersonnel ».
Biographie
Sullivan obtient son doctorat en médecine à Chicago en 1917 et, en 1921, commence à travailler avec des patients schizophrènes au St Elisabeth Hospital à Washington sous la direction de William Alanson White. En 1923, il rencontre Clara Thompson, avec qui il commence une analyse didactique en 1933. Thompson avait été l'élève d'Adolf Meyer et avait elle-même suivi une analyse didactique avec Sandor Ferenczi. Dans les années 30, reconnaissant l'influence des sciences sociales en psychiatrie, Sullivan travaille avec les ethnologues Ruth Benedict, Margaret Mead et Bronislaw Malinowski et le linguiste Edward Sapir. En 1936, avec Clara Thompson, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann et Erich Fromm, il crée le William Alanson White Institute. De 1936 à 1947, il dirige la Washington School of Psychiatry et dirige, avec Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, la clinique Chesnut Lodge où ensemble, avec d'autres analystes connus (parmi lesquels Harold Searles et Donald D. Jackson), ils développent les principes d'une psychothérapie institutionnelle destinée notamment aux psychotiques et aux schizophrènes.
