British Energy Group plc est une société britannique de production et de fourniture d'électricité dont l'activité est située au Royaume-Uni. British Energy exploite une centrale au charbon située à Eggborough (East Yorkshire) et huit centrales nucléaires via la filiale British Nuclear Fuels plc. Elle produit 16% de l'électricité consommée en Grande-Bretagne et emploie plus de 6.000 personnes.

Son siège social est situé dans la ville écossaise de Livingston (West Lothian).

Historique

  • British Energy a été fondée en 1995 pour faire fonctionner les huit centrales nucléaires les plus modernes de Grande-Bretagne.
  • En 1996, British Energy a été privatisée.
  • Le 25 septembre 2008, EDF s'empare de British Energy pour 12,5 milliards de livres sterling (15,7 milliards d'euros). Le gouvernement britannique, qui détient 35,2% du capital de British Energy, s’est félicité de cette transaction[1].

EDF possède désormais huit centrales nucléaires, et va construire quatre nouveaux réacteurs EPR dont le premier sera en service d’ici à 2017.
La direction d'EDF avait annoncé que dans un second temps, le groupe EDF devrait revendre 25 % du capital au gazier britannique Centrica. EDF est déjà présent au Royaume-Uni via sa filiale EDF Energy, qui emploie 13 000 personnes et gère 5,5 millions de comptes clients. Cette filiale administre déjà trois centrales thermiques, deux fonctionnant au charbon et la troisième au gaz naturel.
