La course autour du monde en équipage en monocoques avec escales.

Inspirée par le navigateur solitaire, Francis Chichester, en 1967, la première Whitbread a eu lieu le 8 septembre 1973. Elle comportait 4 étapes.

Édition 1973-74

  • 18 bateaux au départ, 13 classés.
  • 6 bateaux français - Classés : 3e, Grand Louis, skipper André Viant ; 4e Kriter, skipper Jack Grout ; 12e, 33 Export, Jean-Pierre Millet.
  • Abandons : Pen Duick VI, skipper Éric Tabarly ; Concorde, skipper Pierre Chassin ; Pen Duick III, skipper Marc Cuicklinski.
  • Vainqueur : skipper Ramon Carlin (MEX) remporte le classement général en temps compensé sur Saylua II, un voilier de 65 pieds (Swan 65, 19,80 m). Éric Tabarly, sur Pen Duick VI, remporte la deuxième étape en temps réel, mais ayant démâté dans la première, et démâtant à nouveau dans la troisième, il ne peut figurer au classement général.
  • Le classement se fait en temps compensé.

  • La Whitbread voit l'arrivée de deux classes de bateaux différentes avec les Maxi et les W60.
  • Avant le classement se faisait en temps compensé avec des règles de handicap pour égaliser les différences entre les types de bateaux. Il y a maintenant deux classements différents.

Édition 1997-98

  • Pour la première fois seuls des yachts de la classe de W60 participent à la régate, et le classement se fait avec un système de points pour revaloriser aussi les plus courtes étapes.
  • Pour améliorer l'utilisation médiumnique, il y a neuf étapes.
  • Volvo se présentait aussi pour la première fois comme sponsor du trophée. La régate s'appelait ainsi Whitbread round the world race for Volvo the Trophy.
