Tavistock Clinic

La Tavistock Clinic est le premier centre de thérapie psychanalytique anglais conventionné fondé en 1920. Il doit son nom au Tavistock Square, son emplacement d'origine dans le district de Bloomsbury à Londres. Il fut ensuite transféré dans le Swiss Cottage (en:Swiss Cottage).

Le fondateur, Hugh Crichton-Miller a travaillé sur les névrose de guerre sous la double influence de Jung et de Freud. Le centre reçoit des enfants, adolescents et leur famille et elle dispense aussi des enseignements à d'autres institutions. L'éclectisme de institution a suscité des controverses et Ernest Jones - entre autres - avait interdit au membres de la Société britannique de psychanalyse de travailler à l'institut. La Tavistock Clinic a cependant compté dans ses rangs des analystes aussi influents que Wilfred Bion[1], Donald Meltzer, Esther Bick[2], Martha Harris, Susan Isaacs, John Bowlby, Michael Fordham (jungien) en tant que consultants.

Durant la Seconde guerre mondiale, la Tavistock a contribué à l'effort national et a initié des communautés thérapeutiques pour soldats et les psychothérapies analytiques de groupe sous l'impulsion de Wilfred Bion pour le plus connu. Les activités de la Tavistock se ont aussi diversifiées avec des consultants pour "changements organisationnels" dans des institution (T.I.H.R. : "Institut des relations humaines de la la Tavistock Clinic"), un service d'aide au familles, un département pour adolescents, etc. Michael Balint et d'autres analystes ont alors rejoint les nombreux intervenants.

Actuellement, la "Tavistock Clinic" et la "Portman Clinic", se sont associés dès 1994 pour devenir Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust qui a pris le statut de fondation depuis 2006. La multitude des organisations qui se référent à la Tavistock, ou sont rattachées à elle d'une manière ou d'une autre, est si nombreuses et diversifiée fait qu'il est maintenant devenu laborieux de savoir à quelle constellation le dit organisme se rattache concrètement et s'il a un quelconque lien avec la "Tavistock historique" dans son lien à la psychanalyse.
