Cab (Cabell) Calloway (25 décembre 1907, Rochester - 18 novembre 1994, Hockessin (Delaware)) était un chanteur de jazz américain.

Il est à l'affiche du Savoy Ballroom de Harlem dès l'âge de 22 ans, puis succède à Duke Ellington en 1933 au célèbre club de jazz « Cotton Club ». Entouré notamment de Dizzy Gillespie, il composera et interprétera divers succès musicaux de premier ordre qui contribueront au développement de la vague bebop ainsi que du mouvement «Zazou» en France, le terme «zazou» étant inspiré d'une onomatopée de Calloway : «Za-Zu-Za». Excellent danseur, il développera un style scénique et vocal très excentrique, avec des pas originaux et des expressions prononcées rapidement en rythme (« Za-Zu-Za », «Hi-De-Hi-De-Hi-De-Ho»), ce que l'on nomme le « scat ».

Dans les années 30 et 40, il est accompagné par son excellent big band comprenant de brillants solistes comme Jonah Jones, Chu Berry, Ike Quebec, Hilton Jefferson et une bonne section rythmique avec le contrebassiste Milt Hinton et successivement les batteurs Cozy Cole, J.C. Heard et Panama Francis. Cab apparaît dans plusieurs films, en particulier dans « Stormy Weather » (Andrew Stone, 1943).

Artistes influencés

La bande originale du film «The Mask» rend hommage à Cab Calloway en réadaptant le thème «Minnie the Moocher». Cab Calloway tourne en 1980 dans le film "The Blues Brothers", dans lequel il chante «Minnie the Moocher».

Le jazz man et crooner français Henri Salvador lui rend hommage dans sa chanson «Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway».
