La norme internationale ISO 639-3 pour les codes de langues définit comme macro-langue, un ensemble de langues étroitement apparentées. On compte ainsi 56 langues dans ISO 639-2 qui sont considérées comme des macro-langues dans ISO 639-3[1]. The use of this category of macrolanguage has been applied in the Ethnologue.com 16th edition[2].
Certaines macro-langues telle que définie par 639-3 ne possèdaient pas de langue individuelle dans ISO 639-2, par exemple "ara". D'autres, comme "nor", avaient déjà leurs langues individuelles ("nno", "nob") dans 639-2. Cela signifie que certaines langues (par exemple "arb") qui étaient considérées par ISO 639-2 comme des dialectes d'une langue ("ara"), sont maintenant elles-mêmes, dans certains contextes, considérées dans ISO 639-3 comme des langages individuelles. This is an attempt to deal with varieties that may be linguistically distinct from each other, but are treated by their speakers as forms of the same language, e.g. in cases of diglossia.
