Louis-Nazaire Bégin (10 janvier 1840 - 18 juillet 1925) était un cardinal québécois, archevêque de Québec de 1898 jusqu'à sa mort.

Biographie

Natif de St-Joseph-de-la-Pointe-Lévis (aujourd'hui Lévis), Louis-Nazaire Bégin fit des études à Rome et enseigna à l'Université Laval, au séminaire de Québec et à l'École normale Laval. Il fut ordonné prêtre le 10 juin 1865, à l'âge de vingt-cinq ans.

Léon XIII le nomme successivement évêque de Chicoutimi en 1888, évêque coadjuteur de Québec en 1891 puis archevêque de Québec en 1898.

Son consécrateur principal fut Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau. Bégin consacra lui-même huit évêques, dont l'archevêque Louis-Joseph-Napoléon-Paul Bruchési.

En 1905, à l'occasion d'une visite de l'actrice Sarah Bernhardt, il demanda aux habitants de Québec de ne pas aller à la représentation théâtrale qui allait être donnée ; les sièges vides ont choqué l’actrice habituée aux foules massive. [1]

Il lutte contre l'exode rural et fonde des journaux catholiques. Il est nommé cardinal par Pie X le 25 mai 1914 avec le titre de cardinal-prêtre de Saint-Vital.

Ayant joué un rôle important dans le clergé canadien pendant plusieurs décennies.
