Wilhelm Gustloff, né le 30 janvier 1895 à Schwerin dans le Land de Mecklembourg-Poméranie occidentale et mort à Davos le 4 février 1936, était un activiste virulent du parti nazi en Suisse (Landesgruppenleiter). Antisémite notoire, il avait contribué à diffuser les Protocoles des Sages de Sion.
Il fut assassiné à Davos le 4 février 1936 par David Frankfurter, un étudiant juif qui souhaitait par ce geste « réveiller son peuple ».
Adolf Hitler décida de baptiser de son nom un paquebot en cours de finition dans les chantiers navals de Hambourg. Le lancement du Wilhelm Gustloff eut lieu en présence de Hitler et de Hedwig, la veuve de Gustloff. Le navire connaitra plus tard un naufrage tragique, une des plus grandes catastrophes maritimes de tous les temps.
