Tiret bas
Le tiret bas, aussi appelé souligné ou blanc souligné, caractère de soulignement ou encore par le mot anglais underscore, est un signe typographique représenté comme ceci « _ ». Il ne remplace pas le trait d'union ( – ) ni le tiret ( — ) qui sont des signes de ponctuation.
Sur les machines à écrire, le tiret bas était le seul moyen de souligner les mots (en le tapant par-dessus les caractères à souligner). Actuellement, dans l'utilisation de certains traitements de texte, il peut servir pour créer un blanc à compléter dans un formulaire (exemple : ________), ou pour créer une ligne de séparation horizontale, faute d'autre méthode.
Il est un diacritique dans certaines langues africaines et amérindiennes.
En informatique, il sert souvent à remplacer les espaces, souvent interdits par des contraintes techniques, notamment dans les noms de fichiers (ce n'est plus très souvent le cas actuellement), les URL, et les identificateurs dans les programmes. Parfois, il sert à marquer une emphase ou une insistance, lorsqu'il est placé de part et d'autre d'un mot (par exemple : « _mot_»).
