Salon de thé

Un salon de thé est en général un endroit public dans lequel est vendu du thé en vrac qu'on peut aussi déguster sur place (le plus souvent); on peut aussi y manger des pâtisseries, des gâteaux sucrés ou salés qui accompagnent le thé. A la différence des cafés, les salons de thé sont en général fumeurs (chicha) et on y vient pour passer un moment de tranquillité.

Au début du XXe siècle, les salons de thé avaient plus l'habitude d'être des lieux où les dames pouvaient se retrouver autour d'un breuvage, un lieu de rendez-vous littéraire où la nourriture pouvait alors être tant intellectuelle que matérielle avec les gâteaux.

En Chine, les salons de thé ou maisons de thé ( 茶館 / 茶馆 cháguǎn ) sont également des lieux de détente traditionnels, où on vend et/ou sert un grand nombre de variétés de thé, soit en dégustation, soit en groupe autour d'un plateau à thé dans un salon privé. Les plus anciennes maisons de thé connues dans l'Histoire ont ouvert au temps de la dynastie Tang, avant l'année 740.

Dans les grandes villes touristiques comme Beijing, certaines maisons de thé servent aujourd'hui de base à une arnaque connue : un touriste est abordé dans la rue par un jeune homme ou une jeune fille parlant bien anglais, qui l'invite à venir déguster du thé. La salle est toujours en étage ou éloignée de la rue. Après plusieurs petites tasses de thés variés, le touriste apprend qu'il a consommé des thés extrêmement coûteux et est invité à sortir sa carte bancaire. La violence physique étant très sévèrement punie en Chine, et ces lieux étant bien connus de la police locale, le touriste peut résister sans crainte.
