L'arsphénamine a été découverte en 1908 par Sahachiro Hata dans le laboratoire de Paul Ehrlich. C'est un médicament composé d'arsenic, utilisé pour traiter la syphilis et la trypanosomiasis. Il s'agit du premier agent chemotherapeutique moderne.
L'arsphénamine est aussi connue sous le nom de Salvarsan (1910), ou de 606.
