Mary Esther Harding

Mary Esther Harding (18881971) était une psychologue jungienne. Elle est considérée comme la première psychologue jungienne, d'importance aux États-Unis.

Vie privée

María Esther Harding est née à Shropshire, en Angleterre, en tant que quatrième fille parmi six enfants issus d'un même père, dentiste. Elle fut une lectrice avide et a été instruite à domicile jusqu'à sa onzième année. Afin d'atteindre son objectif d'arriver à être docteur et missionnaire, elle a assisté à des cours de médecine à l'École de Londres de Médecine, école ayant à l'époque un enseignement spécialisé pour femmes. C'est dans cette école qu'elle terminera sa carrière estudiantine en 1914 dans une classe, ne comportant plus que neuf étudiantes. Il convient de noter que cet hôpital de Londres était l'un des premiers à accepter des femmes en internat de médecine. C'est là, qu'elle écrira son livre, De l'échec circulatoire de la diphtérie, alors qu'elle avait, elle-même, contracté cette maladie à l'hôpital. Après sa récupération, une amie appelée, Constance Long, lui a fourni une traduction effectuée par Beatriz Hinkle de l'œuvre de Carl Gustav Jung la Psychologie de l'Inconscient. C'est ce « cadeau » qui la conduisit et avec elle, un petit groupe d'étudiants sympathisants, vers la Psychologie analytique mais aussi jusqu'à la maison de Küsnacht de Carl Gustav Jung, à Zurich en Suisse.

Psychologie analytique

En 1919, avec Eleanor Bertine et Kristine Mann, elles, voyagèrent à Zurich pour l'une des Conférences Médicales Internationales des Femmes, au cours de laquelle elle apprirent à mieux se connaitre. Eleanor Bertine et Esther Harding ont alors développé là une relation étroite et en 1924 elles décidèrent de s'installer à New York. Chaque année elles voyagèrent à Zurich pour deux mois d'analyse et elles passaient les étés dans l'Île Bailey, Maine, dans la maison d'été héréditaire de Kristine Mann. C'est depuis cet endroit tranquille, confortable, loin des distractions de la vie quotidienne et qu'elles menèrent des expériences profondes sur l'inconscient.

Communauté jungienne

María Esther Harding est devenue influente dans la communauté de la psychologie analytique et jungienne de New York, et fut un auteur prodigieux et un conférencier réputé aux États-Unis et le Canada sur les questions de psychologie.

Son premier livre jungien intitulé le Chemin de Toutes les Femmes (The Way of All Women) a été un best seller et a été traduit dans beaucoup de langues et a amener de nombreuses personnes à la psychologie jungienne.

Harding a écrit beaucoup d'autres livres bien connus, y compris : L'Énergie psychique (Psychic Energy), les mystères de la femme (Women's mysteries), 'Image Paternelle (The Parental Image), et J'et Je (The I and not I), ainsi que de très nombreux articles et documents en rapport avec une variété thématique de la dépression à la religion.

Harding a aussi été aidé à la création de beaucoup d'organisations Jungienne, comme le Club de Psychologie Analytique de New York (The Analytical Psychology Club) en 1936, la Société Médicale pour la Psychologie Analytique. Division Orientale (The Médical Society for Analytical Psychology. Eastern Divisionen) en 1946 et la Fondation C.G. Jung de Psychologie Analytique (C.G. Jung Foundation for Analytical Psychology) des États-Unis en 1963.
