John Macoun

John Macoun

John Macoun est un botaniste britannique, né le 17 avril 1831 à Magheralin dans le Comté de Down et mort le 18 juillet 1920 à Sidney en Colombie-Britannique.

Il obtient son Master of Arts à Syracuse. Il se rend en Ontario en 1850 où il exploite une ferme jusqu’en 1857. Il est instituteur jusqu’en 1874 avant de devenir professeur de botanique à l’Albert College de Belleville (Ontario) en 1868, puis professeur d’histoire naturelle de 1875 à 1879. Il devient botaniste pour le gouvernement du dominion en 1881 puis directeur-assistant et naturaliste pour le Bureau de recherche géologique en 1887. En 1888, il devient membre de la Société royale du Canada.

Alice Eastwood (1859-1953) lui dédie en 1913 l’espèce Oreocarya macounii de la famille des Boraginaceae.
