Ce pétrolier fait partie des quatre pétroliers géants construits à la fin des années 1970 aux Chantiers de l'Atlantique à Saint-Nazaire. Les trois autres étant le Batillus, le Bellamya, et le Pierre Guillaumat.

Le Prairial fut livré à la Compagnie Nationale de Navigation en 1979, a changé de mains plusieurs fois avant d'être démoli en 2003 sous le nom de Sea Giant.
