A Legal Matter est une chanson du groupe britannique The Who parue en 1965 sur l'album My Generation, à la onzième piste.
Genèse et enregistrement
Ce titre a été enregistre le 12 novembre 1965 dans le studio A des studios IBC de Londres[1].
Réception
Après la rupture entre les Who et leur manager Shel Talmy, la maison de disques Brunswick sortit ce titre en single le 7 mars 1966 pour gêner le lancement du nouveau 45 tours du groupe, Substitute. Cette stratégie ne fonctionna guère, A Legal Matter pointant à la 32e place des charts anglais, tandis que Substitute atteignit la cinquième position.
Caractéristiques artistiques
Cette chanson est dans la veine de la plupart des titres de l'album. Il s'agit d'une chanson pop énergique, à la guitare et à la batterie proéminentes, ayant pour sujet une histoire d'amour tumultueuse. Les paroles semblent parler d'un mariage se terminant en "affaire légale" (legal matter).
C'est la première occurrence dans la discographie des Who où Pete Townshend est au chant principal. Des rumeurs indiquent que Roger Daltrey n'a pu enregistrer ce titre à cause de disputes conjugales[1].
