Le battement par minute, couramment abrégé par le sigle bpm, est une unité de mesure utilisée pour exprimer le tempo de la musique ou le rythme cardiaque, quantifié par le nombre de battements se produisant en une minute.

Sur une partition de musique classique, des termes italiens (comme « allegro » ou « presto ») servent à indiquer le tempo. La mention « a tempo » suivi de la vitesse en bpm peut aussi apparaître pour spécifier le rythme exact (exemple : « a tempo 128 »). Dans les partitions de musiques actuelles comme le rock ou blues, il est très rare de voir les appellations italiennes de tempo, le rythme est habituellement spécifié en bpm.

Le rythme semble aussi très important dans le domaine de la musique électronique où l'on peut distinguer de nombreux styles par la rapidité de leur tempo. Exemples : trip-hop : 80-90 bpm, down tempo : 90-100 bpm, house : 115-130 bpm, dance et trance : 130-150 bpm, drum & bass / jungle : 160-170 bpm, dubstep / grime : 130-140 bpm, techno : 125-150 bpm, techno hardcore : 150-160 bpm, Makina : 145-190 bpm, Speedcore (M1di) 200-600(+) bpm ect...

Le morceau au bpm le plus élevé du monde est Thousand de Moby, qui comme son nom l'indique (« mille » en anglais) oscille jusqu'à 1 000 bpm. Il est d'ailleurs inscrit au Guinness Books of Records.
