Simone Forti, né en 1935 à Florence en Italie, est une peintre, danseuse, et chorégraphe américaine d'origine italienne.
Biographie
Simone Forti émigre avec sa famille à Los Angeles en 1939. Elle fait tout d'abord des études de sociologie avant de s'orienter vers la peinture sous l'influence du mouvement expressionniste abstrait. En 1955, elle rencontre Anna Halprin à San Francisco et intègre sa compagnie de performeurs. Elle suit cette dernière à New York et travaille notamment avec le chorégraphe Merce Cunningham et le musicologue Robert Dunn au technique d'improvisation et de danse moderne. Au sein du Judson Church Theater elle côtoie les danseurs et futurs chorégraphes Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs, Yvonne Rainer et Steve Paxton.
Après avoir participé à de nombreux happenings en compagnie notamment de Robert Whitman et Claes Oldenburg, elle entame une carrière de chorégraphe en 1967. Son travail s'oriente vers le minimalisme en collaborant avec Trisha Brown et Steve Paxton et développe, en s'inspirant des mouvements des animaux du zoo de Rome, un style de « mouvements naturels ». Son travail chorégraphique est en relation avec les compositions musicales de Charlemagne Palestine et Jon Gibson entre autres.
En 1986, elle fonde la Simone Forti & Troupe avec laquelle elle va diffuser dans le monde ses recherches en « danse narrative » qu'elle appelle Logomotion. En 1995, elle obtient un Bessie Award pour l'ensemble de son œuvre.
