Edward Charles Pickering
Edward Charles Pickering, né à Boston le 19 juillet 1846 et mort à Cambridge (Massachusetts) le 3 février 1919, est un astronome et physicien américain, frère d'un autre astronome célèbre, William Henry Pickering.
Biographie
Avec l'astronome allemand Hermann Carl Vogel, Pickering fut le premier à découvrir une étoile binaire spectroscopique.
Il fut également directeur du Harvard College Observatory (HCO, Observatoire de l'université de Harvard), où il accomplit de grandes avancées dans la collecte des données spectrales sur les étoiles, notamment grâce à l'usage de l'astrophotographie. À Harvard, il recruta un bon nombre de collègues astronomes féminines, notamment Annie Jump Cannon, Henrietta Swan Leavitt, Williamina Fleming et Antonia Maury. Ces femmes, parfois surnommées dans la communauté scientifique le « harem de Pickering », réalisèrent d'importantes découvertes au HCO sous la houlette de Pickering.
En 1911, il co-fonda avec William Tyler Olcott l'American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO, Association américaine des observateurs d'étoiles variables).
