Yehuda Meir Shapiro (3 mars 1887 - 27 octobre 1933) est un rabbin hassidique du XXe siècle, membre du parlement polonais, dont l'influence sur le judaïsme mondial est incomparable jusqu'à nos jours, par son introduction de l'étude quotidienne du Talmud (Daf Yomi)[1],[2],[3],[4],[5],[6],[7],[8],[9],[10],[11],[12],[13] en 1923 et par sa création de la Yeshiva des Chachmei Lublin[14],[15] en 1930.

Éléments biographiques
Yehuda Meir Shapiro est né à Suceava, en Autriche, (depuis en Roumanie), le 3 mars 1887 (7 Adar 5647)[16]. C'est un descendant de Pinhas de Korets, dont il porte le même nom de famille.
Jeune enfant, il était considéré comme un prodige[17].
En 1906, à l'âge de 19 ans, il se marie avec Malka Toba[18] la fille de Reb Yaakov Breitman, un riche marchand de Ternopil, en Ukraine.
Il a 23 ans quand il devient rabbin de Galina, en Galicie. Il demeure 10 ans dans cette ville et y fonde la yeshiva Bnei Torah. Il devient ensuite le rabbin de Sanok, en Pologne puis de Petrykaw, en Pologne, aujourd'hui en Biélorussie.
En 1931, il devient le rabbin de Lublin[19].
Il décède le 27 octobre 1933 (le 7 Mar’hèchvane 5694) à l'âge de 46 ans.
En 1948, à New York, des disciples et admirateurs de Meir Shapiro lancent une revue rabbinique avec pour titre Or ha-Meir, où paraissent des inédits de Meir Shapiro[20].
Meir Shapiro et le Chortkover Rebbe
Le grandpère maternel de Meir Shapiro, Shmuel Tzvi Schur, rabbin de Nistritz, le Minchas Shai[21], l'introduit au Chortkover Rebbe, dont il deviendra un disciple[22],[16].
La Yeshiva des Chachmei Lublin
Le nom de cette yeshiva reste attaché à son fondateur, Meir Shapiro[23],[24],[25],[26],[27],[28],[29],[30].

Meir Shapiro compositeur
Les niggunim (chants) de Meir Shapiro continuent d'être chantés dans le monde entier, bien que nombreux sont ceux qui ne se doutent même pas qu'il en était le compositeur[31],[32],[33].
