Carl Wilhelm Siemens
Sir William Siemens (1823-1883) Carl Wilhelm Siemens (4 avril 1823 à Lenthe, Allemagne - 19 novembre 1883, Grande-Bretagne) était un ingénieur anglais originaire d'Allemagne, frère de Werner von Siemens, inventeur et créateur de procédés pour la fabrication de l'acier.
Il naquit à Lenthe, en Allemagne et émigra en Angleterre en 1844. Par la suite, il dirigea la branche anglaise de la société de Siemens & Halske. Il obtint la nationalité britannique en 1859 et fut fait chevalier en 1883.
Il est célèbre pour le développement du four à sole avec réchauffage des gaz appelé four Siemens, qu'il fit breveter en 1856. Ce four révolutionnaire fut utilisé par Pierre-Émile Martin par la suite pour l'affinage de l'acier : procédé Martin-Siemens appelé parfois procédé Martin ou même procédé Siemens (voir Histoire de la production de l'acier). Il fut aussi l'un des pionniers de l'utilisation de l'énergie électrique et l'une des plus importantes personnalités de Grande-Bretagne dans le domaine de la science et de l'ingénierie.
