William Irish

William Irish est le pseudonyme de Cornell Woolrich, écrivain américain né le 4 décembre 1903 à New York, où il meurt le 25 septembre 1968.

Né dans un milieu aisé, il suit son père, ingénieur des travaux publics, au Mexique, à Cuba et aux Bahamas. Après le divorce de ses parents, à l'âge de 15 ans, il rentre à New York pour vivre auprès de sa mère, pianiste, et termine ses études en 1925 à l'université de Columbia. Il écrit son premier roman, Chef d'accusation en 1935, influencé par l'œuvre de Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Il est engagé comme scénariste à Hollywood pour travailler sur l'adaptation de Les enfants du Ritz, paru en 1927. Il se marie en 1930 avec Violet Virginia Blackton (1910-1965), fille du producteur de film muet. J. Stuart Blackton., mais cette union est un échec et il divorce au bout de trois mois. Il retourne alors vivre chez sa mère avec qui il vivra jusqu'à sa mort, dans le même appartement d'Harlem. Jusqu'en 1940, les éditeurs refusent de publier ses livres, il publie dans des pulps près de trois cent cinquante nouvelles sous trois noms différents : William Irish, George Hopley et son vrai nom. Il connaît le succès à partir de 1940, avec La mariée était en noir. En 1954, il reçoit le Grand prix de littérature policière en France pour Un pied dans la tombe. Sa mère meurt en 1957, il s'isole de plus en plus, sombre dans l'alcoolisme. Il est amputé d'une jambe atteinte de gangrène. Il meurt d'une attaque en 1968.

De nombreux metteurs en scène ont porté les œuvres à l'écran de ce maître du suspense, notamment Alfred Hitchcock pour Fenêtre sur cour, d'après une nouvelle, et François Truffaut pour La sirène du Mississippi et La mariée était en noir. William Irish a également écrit des récits fantastiques. Les œuvres de William Irish sont parues en France dans la collection Série blême de Gallimard, et ont également été éditées par La Découverte, Rivages et chez Presse Pocket.
