Maha Thray Sithu U Thant (22 janvier 1909 – 25 novembre 1974), était un homme politique birman et le troisième secrétaire général des Nations unies.

Né le 22 janvier 1909 à Pantanaw, en Birmanie, Thant fit ses études à l'université de Rangoon et devint professeur (1928-1931) puis directeur (1931-1947) de la Pantanaw National High School. En 1947, après que l'assemblée constituante birmane eut voté l'indépendance vis-à-vis du Royaume-Uni, Thant fut directeur de la presse dans le gouvernement provisoire. Après l'indépendance birmane (1948), il devint directeur de la radiodiffusion (1949), secrétaire au ministère de l'Information (1949-1953) et secrétaire du Premier ministre U Nu (1953-1957). En 1952, il fut aussi membre de la délégation birmane aux Nations unies. Il devint le représentant permanent de son pays à l'ONU en 1957. À la mort du secrétaire général de l'ONU, Dag Hammarskjöld, en 1961, Thant fut élu pour finir le mandat de celui-ci, et fut réélu en 1966 ; il démissionna en décembre 1971.

Au cours des dix années passées à la tête de l'ONU, Thant suscita l'admiration pour son intégrité et son talent de négociateur patient et subtil. Il mourut le 25 novembre 1974 à New York. Sa dépouille, rapatriée en Birmanie, devint l'objet d'une lutte entre les étudiants birmans et le gouvernement militaire de Ne Win, qui s'en empara et l'inhuma dans une tombe scellée à la pagode Kuthodaw de Rangoon.
