The Roots est une formation de hip-hop américaine influencée par d'autres genres musicaux tels que le jazz, le funk, la soul... et fondée à Philadelphie en 1987 par Black Thought (alias Tariq Trotter) et Questlove (alias Ahmir Thompson).

Les autres membres ont été ou sont les suivants : AJ Shine, HUB (alias Leonard Hubbard), Maldog on the Keys (alias Kamal Gray), F. Knuckles (alias Frank Walker), Capt (alias Kirk Douglas), Malik B (alias Malik Abdul-Basit), Rahzel (The Godfather Of Noyze), Scratch (alias Kyle Jones), Ben Kenney, , Kid Crumbs, Josh « The Rubberband » Abrams, Martin Luther et Scott Storch.

The Roots a multiplié les collaborations avec de nombreux artistes : Erykah Badu, Cody Chesnutt, Common, Talib Kweli, D'Angelo, Guru, J Dilla (alias Jay Dee), Mos Def, Bahamadia, Jill Scott, ou plus récemment Al Green.

The Roots (« les racines ») se forme grâce à la rencontre entre Black Tought et Questlove. Leur musique présente plusieurs genres : hip-hop, rap, jazz, ainsi que de l'acoustique.

Le groupe est une exception dans le milieu hip-hop, par la présence d'instrumentistes sur scène et leur démarche sobre. Ils ont par ailleurs développé, dans le cadre de la conception d'albums, la technique consistant à sampler (échantillonner) la musique qu'ils jouent eux-mêmes en studio. Cette technique est également utilisée par le carré de producteurs The Soulquarians, formé par leur batteur Ahmir Thompson, D'Angelo, le clavier James Poyser et le défunt producteur de hip-hop J Dilla, à la baguette de deux albums majeurs et aux sonorités très soul : Like Water for Chocolate de Common et Voodoo de D'Angelo.

Depuis le 2 mars 2009, il est le groupe officiel de Late Night with Jimmy Fallon sur NBC.

Anecdotes

  • Les numéros de pistes se suivent d'un album studio à l'autre. La liste de pistes du live The Roots Come Alive reprend pour chaque morceau son numéro original au détriment de l'ordre des pistes[1].
  • Questlove apparaît dans le clip de Duck Sauce Barbra Streisand [2].
