The Faculty ou Les Enseignants au Québec, est un film américain de Robert Rodriguez sorti en 1998.

Synopsis

Herrington High est une école comme les autres. Ses murs sont devenus peu à peu crasseux, ses manuels scolaires périmés, ses professeurs paraissent usés bien avant la retraite, ses élèves, cerveaux et crétins, sérieux ou cancres notoires, affrontent des parents qui ne les comprennent plus et des professeurs qui ne les ont jamais compris. Mais les adolescents de Herrington High se heurtent à un problème inédit. Un de leurs professeurs est tellement bizarre et inquiétant qu'ils le soupçonnent d'appartenir à une autre espèce, de venir d'une autre planète... Commence alors pour 6 d'entre eux une incroyable aventure où on ne peut avoir confiance en personnes, où la seule échappatoire est d'anéantir leur chef si l'on ne veut pas perdre... Ils apprennent qu'ils ne peuvent plus compter sur tous leurs ami(e)s, car certains seraient déjà contaminés, et ils découvrent que leur chef n'est pas le prof de sport...

Genèse du projet

The Faculty est à l'origine une histoire de David Wechter et Bruce Kimmel. Le scénario est ensuite écrit par Kevin Williamson, rendu célèbre grâce à son travail sur la saga Scream, et spécialiste du film d'horreur pour adolescents (Souviens-toi... l'été dernier, Cursed, ...)[2]. Robert Rodriguez est alors engagé par le studio pour seulement réaliser le film, ce qu'on appelle un « film de commande ». Rodriguez est cependant habitué à occuper presque tous les postes sur ses précédents films (réalisateur, scénariste, monteur, producteur, ...). Sur ce film, Rodriguez n'est que réalisateur et monteur.

Casting

Malgré le film « imposé » par le studio, Rodriguez a pu engager son amie Salma Hayek, qui avait travaillé avec lui sur Roadracers, Desperado et Une nuit en enfer.

Charisma Carpenter devait à l'origine tenir le rôle de Delilah, mais a dû refuser en raison de son attachement à la série Buffy contre les vampires[3]. Elle est donc remplacée par Jordana Brewster.

Le film marque le début de carrière à l'écran du jeune Usher, à l'époque surtout connu comme chanteur de R'n'B.

La sœur de Robert Rodriguez apparaît dans le film, dans le rôle d'une fille punk parlant à Marybeth dans le bureau[3].

Tournage

Le film a été tourné au Texas, principalement à Austin. Certaines scènes ont été tournées à Dallas et à la high school de Lockhart, Texas[4]

Références et clins d'œil

  • Au début du film, on peut voir un graffiti disant « Tito and Tarantula ». Tito & Tarantula est un groupe de rock latino ayant collaboré avec Robert Rodriguez sur Desperado et Une nuit en enfer[3].
  • Lorsque des étudiants sont appelés pour aller dans le bureau de la principale, le nom de Tommy Nix est mentionné. Tommy Nix est ami de Rodriguez, qui a notamment joué dans son téléfilm Roadracers[3].
