SWARM (Essaim en anglais) est une constellation de 3 micro-satellites scientifiques de l'Agence spatiale européenne dont la mission est de mesurer le champ magnétique terrestre. Les satellites, développés par Astrium, doivent être lancés à l'aide d'une seule fusée en 2012[1] et leur mission doit durer 4 ans.
Objectifs de la mission
La constellation de satellites Swarm doit mesurer l'intensité, la direction et les variations du champ magnétique terrestre avec comme objectif de mieux connaitre :
- Processus de génération du champ magnétique terrestre par le noyau métallique de la Terre
- Interactions entre le noyau et le manteau
- Champ magnétique de la lithosphère
- Conductivité électrique dans le manteau
- Influence du Soleil sur le champ magnétique

Les satellites sont placés en orbite polaire : 2 naviguent en tandem à faible proximité l'un de l'autre à une altitude 450 km, le troisième croisant à une altitude de 530 km.
Les instruments embarqués sont :
- Magnétomètre vectoriel: mesure vectorielle du champ magnétique (VFM)
Le VFM sera installé sur un banc optique en compagnie d'un viseur d'étoile (STR)
- Magnétomètre scalaire: mesure d'intensité (ASM) pour étalonner le précédent
- Instrument de mesure du champ électrique (EFI)
- Accéléromètre (ACC)
- Réflecteur laser (LRR)
