Poteen

Poitín, poteen, ou potcheen, est une boisson traditionnelle irlandaise, fortement alcoolisée (degré d'alcool : 90%-95%), obtenue par distillation[1]. Le poitín était distillé traditionnellement dans un petit alambic, appelé pot still, car on le plaçait directement sur le feu comme un pot, d'où le nom du produit obtenu[2]. Fabriqué traditionnellement à partir d'orge maltée ou de pommes de terre, il fait partie des plus fortes boissons alcooliques du monde, et, en Irlande, il fut considéré pendant des siècles comme un produit illicite, un moonshine[3].

En Irlande, l'alcool fabriqué en privé, sans autorisation spécifique de l'État, fut interdit en 1661[1]. Le 7 mars 1997, l'Office of the Revenue Commissioners irlandais retira son opposition à la vente du poitín en République d'Irlande, alors que son exportation était autorisée depuis 1989. En 2008, le Conseil de l'Union européenne et le Parlement européen accordèrent au poitín irlandais une Indication géographique protégée, conformément au règlement de l'Union européenne n°110/2008 Annexe III concernant la définition, la désignation, la présentation, l'étiquetage et la protection des indications géographiques des boissons spiritueuses, abrogeant le règlement (CEE) n° 1576/89 du Conseil[4].

Aujourd'hui en République d'Irlande, deux marques sont autorisées à produire du poitín : Knockeen Hills et Bunratty[3].

  • Plusieurs chansons du répertoire folk traditionnel irlandais, comme The Hills of Connemara et The Rare Old Mountain Dew traitent du poitín.
  • Le poitín est un thème puissant dans la poésie et la prose irlandaises du XIXe siècle. Le critique irlandais Sinéad Sturgeon a démontré comment la légalité contestée de ce produit est devenu un thème crucial dans les œuvres de Maria Edgeworth et de William Carlton[5].
  • Le premier long métrage tourné entièrement en irlandais s'appelle Poitín (1979). L'histoire met en scène un distillateur clandestin, ses deux agents et sa fille, dans le Connemara, au plus profond de l'Ouest irlandais.
