John Misaubin

John Misaubin , surnommé Monsieur de la Pillule, (1673 - 1734) fut un médecin franco-anglais du XVIIIe siècle considéré par certains comme un charlatan. C'était le modèle pour le médecin dans The Harlot's Progress de William Hogarth, et il est l'un des quatre médecins que tourne en ridicule Henry Fielding dans son roman Tom jones. Entre autres, Fielding dit que Misaubin voulait que ses correspondants épistolaires employassent toujours le formule suivant : « To Dr. Misaubin in the World, » car « Il y eut très peu de gens sur terre à qui sa grande renommée ne fut connue[1]. » C'était un personnage qui apparaissait souvent dans des gravures satiriques ; on le ridiculisait pour ces manières bizarres ainsi que pour son accent français. Ses pilules guérissaient les maladies vénériennes.

Il naquit à Mussidan, France, et se maria avec la fille de l'apothicaire de Louis XIV. Il s'installa à Londres et y devint un sujet de la couronne anglaise en 1719 avant de se faire accepter dans le Royal College of Physicians, un poste auquel seuls les médecins très bien formés purent accéder. Il mourut à Londres en 1734.
