John Galsworthy

John Galsworthy (Kingston Hill, 14 août 1867 - Londres, 31 janvier 1933) est un romancier et dramaturge britannique.

Biographie

Issu d'une famille aisée, il étudie le droit à Oxford. Diplômé en 1890, il ne pratique cependant pas. En effet, l'amitié qui le lie à Joseph Conrad le pousse à écrire.

Sa première pièce de théâtre, The Silver Box (1906), devient un succès. Il la fait suivre immédiatement de The Man of Property (1906), premier de la trilogie Forsyte. Toutefois, il a publié plusieurs autres romans dont The Island Pharisees (1904) et beaucoup de pièces. Les plus célèbres incluent Strife (1909) et The Skin Game (1920).

Son œuvre la plus connue est la saga des Forsyte, une série de romans publiés entre 1906 et 1921. Cette trilogie, fresque de la société britannique, est composée de The Man of Property (1906), A Modern Comedy et End of the Chapter.

Il est lauréat du Prix Nobel de littérature en 1932.

L'année suivante, une tumeur au cerveau l'emporte. Il repose aujourd'hui au cimetière Highgate de Londres.

Une bonne part de son travail recèle un commentaire social, se concentrant particulièrement sur le système de classe britannique. La femme au mariage malheureux est également un autre thème récurrent.
