Edmund Allenby
Sir Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby (23 avril 1861 – 14 mai 1936), 1er vicomte Allenby, fut un général britannique.
Bien que fâché avec Douglas Haig, alors commandant en chef de l'armée britannique dès 1915, il connut le succès dans les campagnes du Proche-Orient, où il fut transféré de force, comme commandant. Il mena le corps expéditionnaire égyptien pendant la Première Guerre mondiale contre les Ottomans et conquit la Palestine et la Syrie en 1917 et 1918. Après l'échec britannique de Gaza, en avril 1917, seul Allenby, à la tête de troupes nombreuses et ardent attaquant, est capable de tenter une percée contre les Ottomans. Il reprend Gaza le 7 décembre 1917, puis Jérusalem le 9 décembre 1917. Surnommé « the Bull » (le Taureau), il poursuit les Ottomans dans leur retraite, pour prendre Damas le 2 octobre 1918. Avec Lawrence d'Arabie et ses volontaires arabes, Allenby a accéléré la capitulation ottomane, signée le 30 octobre 1918. Il termina sa carrière avec le rang de général et obtint le titre de Haut commissaire britannique en Egypte.
