L'hyperinflation est une inflation extrêmement élevée échappant à tout contrôle. Elle entraîne en général une forte récession économique. Phillip Cagan la définit en 1956 comme une période durant laquelle le niveau d'inflation se maintient au-dessus de 50% par mois.
