Hoechst était un groupe chimique et pharmaceutique d'origine allemande (Francfort). Elle tire son nom de la ville — Höchst, près de Francfort — où la société a été créée en 1863 par trois chimistes allemands : Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Meister, Eugen Lucius et Ludwig August Müller
Le groupe a fusionné en décembre 1964 avec l'entreprise Chemische Werke Albert à Mainz-Amöneburg.
Le groupe a fusionné en décembre 1999 avec l'entreprise française Rhône-Poulenc pour donner le groupe Aventis qui lui-même fusionnera en 2004 avec Sanofi-Synthélabo, pour former le géant de l'industrie pharmaceutique français Sanofi-Aventis). La société en France comptait après 1945 la division chimique (Hoechst Peralta) et la division pharmaceutique (Hoechst Somédia).
Elle diffusait un magazine Die Brücke (Le Pont), qui présentait produits et activités.
