Le Basketball Hall of Fame répond à la tradition anglo-saxonne du Hall of Fame dans le domaine du basket-ball, on pourrait parler de Panthéon du basket-ball américain et mondial. Il a été fondé en 1959.

Situation géographique

Il est situé au Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame du nom de l'inventeur du basket-ball, James Naismith. Il est situé à Springfield dans le Massachusetts où la discipline fut inventée.

Accès au Hall of Fame

Pour être éligible, un joueur doit s'être retiré de la compétition depuis plus de 5 ans. Les entraîneurs, arbitres et autres contributeurs sont également éligibles sous diverses conditions.

Les équipes du Hall of Fame

Seulement 4 équipes entières ont été introduites dans le Hall of Fame : les Buffalo Germans, le New York Renaissance, les Original Celtics et les Harlem Globetrotters.

Depuis le 8 septembre 2006 et l'intronisation officielle de Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, Joe Dumars, Geno Auriemma, David Gavitt et Sandro Gamba, le Basketball Hall of Fame compte 269 membres et 5 équipes.
