George Washington Goethals.
George Washington Goethals (né le 29 juin 1858 et mort le 21 janvier 1928) était un célèbre ingénieur civil et officier de l'US Army, essentiellement connu pour avoir supervisé (à partir de 1903) l'achevement du Canal de Panamá à la tête du Corps des ingénieurs de l'armée des États-Unis jusqu'à l'ouverture de celui-ci.
Il a donné son nom à un pont situé entre New York et Elizabeth, le Goethals Bridge et à une décoration remise aux ingénieurs, la Goethals Medal. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le navire Américain liberty ship SS G. W. Goethals reçut son nom. Il a aussi une rue dans la ville de Richland (Washington, un monument à Panama et un boulevard à Gamboa (Panama).
Goethals était né dans le quartier de Brooklyn, à New York et avait suivi des études au City College of New York, puis à l'académie militaire de West Point dont il fut diplômé en 1880. Ses parents étaient des immigrés venus de Stekene en Flandres (Belgique). Ils s'appelaient Johannes Baptista Goethals, un charpentier, et Marie Le Barron[1].
