Mer Celtique
La mer Celtique ((ga) : An Mhuir Cheilteach; (cy) : Y Môr Celtaidd; (kw) : An Mor Keltek; (br) : Ar Mor Keltiek; (en) : Celtic Sea) est le nom de la partie maritime située au sud de l'Irlande, et qui sépare l'Irlande, au nord, de la Grande-Bretagne, à l'est.
Elle communique avec l'océan Atlantique à l'ouest, la mer d'Irlande par le canal Saint-Georges à l'est, et la Manche au sud, entre les îles Scilly et Ouessant.
Elle se caractérise par une houle croisée entre la grande houle de l'Atlantique qui vient se heurter à la remontée des fonds, et la houle du canal Saint-Georges.
De nombreuses courses au large traversent la mer Celtique pour virer le célèbre rocher du Fastnet, près de la pointe sud-ouest de l'Irlande.
C'est à l'océanographe et biologiste britannique Ernest William Lyons Holt que l'on doit la première utilisation du terme « Mer Celtique » pour désigner l'étendue marine recouvrant le plateau continental au sud de l'Irlande et à l'ouest de l'entrée de la Manche[1].
