L'expression doctrine du Big Stick renvoie à la politique étrangère menée par le président Theodore Roosevelt au début du XXe siècle et visant à faire assumer aux États-Unis une place de véritable police internationale.
Le but principal de cette doctrine est de protéger les intérêts économiques des États-Unis en Amérique latine, principalement dans la zone des Caraïbes. Elle conduit à un accroissement des forces navales de l'armée américaine et à un engagement plus important sur la scène politique mondiale. Le recours à des représailles militaires est donc mis en perspective en cas d'échec.
Roosevelt a emprunté le concept d'un proverbe africain : « Parle doucement et porte un gros bâton ». Il a employé pour la première fois cette expression au Minnesota State Fair, le 2 septembre 1901, douze jours avant que l'assassinat du président William McKinley ne le propulse à la présidence des États-Unis.
