Algol (β Persei) est une étoile variable à éclipses de la constellation de Persée, de magnitude 2, qui varie périodiquement tous les 2 jours et 21 heures environ. Algol a un compagnon sombre qui l'occulte et est responsable de sa baisse de luminosité, il s'agit donc d'une binaire à éclipses (elle est d'ailleurs le prototype des variables de type Algol).
La distance qui nous sépare d'Algol est de 92,8 années-lumière.
Étymologiquement, Algol dérive de l'arabe ra's al-ghoul رأس الغول: «la tête (ra's) de l'ogre (al-ghoul)». En astronomie chinoise, cette étoile fait partie de l'astérisme Daling, qui représente un mausolée.
Possédant un mouvement propre très petit comparé à sa vitesse radiale, Algol est passé non loin du Système solaire il y a 7,3 millions d'années. Il n'est pas exclu qu'elle ait pu perturber le nuage d'Oort en cette occasion, et provoquer un afflux de comètes vers le système solaire interne.
